Adding Salt

I have a terrapin hatchling and he was raised in fresh water but everything I’ve read says they get skin problems and shell rot if not kept in brackish water. I have him in with a florida red bellied cooter and a common musk. All about the same size. I was wondering if I added salt if it would hurt the other guys. I guess if worse comes to worse I can always put him in his own tank with the salt. Thanks, Chris

Hi Chris, Captive bred terrapins do not require a brackish environment and adding salt will hurt the other species. If you insist on adding salt, then separate him and add some aquarium rock salt (not marine salt) according to the dosage recommended. All the best. -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “ogilvie0215”

Hi Chun, I don’t know the difference btw aquariam salt and marine salt – I have been using “instant ocean” – is that bad? Thanks! Nicole (I have only the two dbts, and they were both rescued as babies from the road/garage at the Jersey shores)Stephen Chew
