I just ran over a turtle with my lawnmower, I think people 8 streets over may have heard me scream. Everything is intact, but it scraped the top of his shell to the point of blood. I don’t think it’s very deep, but I don’t want to put him back out like that! I have him in my bathtub right now with a little water and a towel for him to burrow if he wants and I rinsed the blood and most of the dirt off. Suggestions? I can get some iodine solution from work tomorrow to soak with if that’s a good idea. I work at a vet, but we only see dogs and cats and I have no idea what to do about turtle injuries! Thanks for any info, I’m going to post to my other turtle group as well, so if anyone gets a double post, sorry! Thanks again, Terry

Terry, Sorry for your plight, but it does happen. You didn’t mention the type of turtle it was, but I’m assuming box turtle. Flood his injury with iodine or betadine and keep it dry. You can cover it with a little gauze and tape, change it daily with another application of the iodine, etc. Don’t put him back outside untill the shell starts to re-grow, as flys will lay eggs in the wound and you will have maggots in a few days feeding on the injured tissue. See if he will eat and give him access to drinking water. Keep him quiet and let him rest. He will heal. Hope this helps. Let me know how you make out. Buzz
