Hey Turtle people, I havent written in a while, but I’ve been reading all the posts. I have a problem. My DB has white circular like sores I guess you would call them, I scaped at one with my finger nail and it came off and now theres a cratter there.. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it is, and how I get rid of it, and what it comes from. Thanks for any info. -Teal

Hi Teal, Unfortunately, your terp has a very common skin/shell infection which will need to be treated aggressively before it spreads and becomes septic. In addition, this is also highly contagious and could cause an outbreak in your terp/turtle population if left unchecked. You will need to scrape all the white stuff off and cleanse with Nolvasan. Silvadene should be applied to the affected areas as a topical treatment. If you are inexperienced with treating turtles, I recommend that you seek out a local vet that specializes in reptiles. Try the ARAV website for referrals: http://www.arav.org You can also go to our geocities website for more detailed instructions on proper treatment: http://www.geocities.com/dterrapin/disease The offending bacteria could already be present in the environment, introduced from the wild or via foods such as freshwater crustaceans. You may need to do some preventative checkups and look for any loose scutes that may have trapped water underneath. All the best. Chun Tail Moderator
