Rick, I am not a breeder nor a DBT expert..I simply have successfully raised DBT’s from hatchlings to their present adult stage. I realize DBT don’t eat veggies in the wild…I told her what I personally feed mine. Mine love veggies and also eat a variety of live food. I don’t know how DBT in the wild would ever come across crushed commercial pelleted food.
Hi Maggie…I am sorry if I came across to harsh, I certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone. It’s just that hatchlings can be so frail if they are not started properly. I have witnessed individuals desperately trying to give them a good start …yet fail because they didn’t get the proper advice initially. A hatchling without the right temperature and food will weaken and go downhill quite quickly if not properly attended to. I am aware of processed food having the nutrients of some vegetables, however I have never had a Diamondback eat vegetables and I am quite interested in your experience. Exactly what “Veggies” do you feed them ? Incidentally, I have also fed my hatchlings worms and crickets which are also indigenous to their natural habitat. I have read and a good friend who is a veterinarian told me that earthworms are filled with parasites and its best to stay away from them. Again I have literally hatched and raised hundreds of DBTs terrapins, and the best advice I can give is to offer them small live fish fry. Mine go wild for them. Regards, Rich Hollander
A note on greens…my dbts totally consume any water hyacinth I put in the pond. It goes so fast I can’t keep it in there. Vickie
Actually it has been documented that they will eat eel grass. Though they are primarily a carnivore. In captivity (from my personal experience) I have one male that enjoys escarole, chicory and dandelion greens. He is rather a hog though and will eat ANYTHING offered to him. Seems if it comes from the pink thing with 5 fingers on the end of it it must be food!!. My others do pick a bit but really have minimal interest. Just an occasional nip here or there. Steve
