My turtle isn’t basking! I’m pretty sure it could get on the rock, but it don’t. I must be doing something wrong so can someone go over the procedure for basking again? Considering that I might need to buy materials to fix this, is it okay for me to “force” bask it? What I mean is to put him a dry tank with the light shining on him for a while.
I had the same worries about my baby dbt for quite awhile, too. I was convinced that she would never get out of the water without me removing her myself. It wasn’t for several months before I finally caught her sitting on her island, shell dry as can be. Since then, I’ve only caught her a couple times basking, and once I even know she stayed up there several hours after I first saw her. As soon as I get too close, however, she’ll dive right in the water, and won’t come out again with me there. A good way to be sure your turtle can get onto the basking rock is to put some turtle treats (freeze-dried shrimp or krill, etc.) on the basking spot where he can’t get to it without completely leaving the water. Leave it there for a day and if you come back and the treat is gone, you know for sure he can get out of the water. From what I understand, its not bad to “force bask” your dbt for short periods of time, but there’s a good chance you may not need to. Jeff — grndtrn
