We joined back in December and haven’t been back to visit since then. I do read a lot of the post and I have gained so much knowledge from this group. Thanks for all the great ideas you give everyone and for sharing your experience. I finally uploaded a few pics of our “Turdy”. (Under Neace’s Turdy) You may remember we found Turdy walking in the middle of the street in our neighborhood. We have finally created a great habitat for Turdy but of course he is growing like a weed and I think I am just going to go to the 50 gallon long. I just have no idea where we will put it!! lol I have two quick questions. One: how do you measure the size? Is it from top to bottom of the shell, side to side of the shell or head to toe? Also do DBT’s get along with other turtles? I want to get a friend for Turdy when we get the 50g tank but the only one’s around here are sliders. Would that be okay or should I hunt more for DBT’s? Thanks again for all your help and I promise to stick around more this time. With 4 boys life gets busy but I am learning so much that I hope I will be able to contribute now too. Kathleen
Welcome back Kathleen! It’s good to hear that Turdy is doing so well! If you haven’t checked out this web site already, you should take a look. It will answer just about every “turtle” question you could ever have and then some. It covers all the basics: over filtering, UVB lighting, proper diets, etc. You literally can get lost on this site for weeks if you really dive into it!!! http://www.austinsturtlepage.com Well, my e-mail isn’t letting me do a cut and paste for some reason this evening, so just do a Google search for “Austin’s Turtle Page” and you’ll get there. Just measure the top of your turtles shell STRAIGHT across (don’t bend along the shell) from front to back. That tells you how big your turtle is. I have my female DBT in with a male RES and have had no problems. Don’t know if that is the norm, but from what I have read, DBT’s are pretty “social” turtles (if there is such a beast) and get along pretty well with most others. I have also read that there might be a little biting among DBT tank mates (2 or more Diamondbacks), particularly when they are younger. I think it all depends on the individual turtles (and what type of luck you have). —- Kathleen

Hi! I’m also on the east coast of Florida and have my FIFTH Diamondback Terrapin. I believe I sent a picture of my first one, which was ornate. My oldest one, is about 4 years old and is not ornate. His back is about 4″ across. All of them were found either in my back yard or walking along the road. I have had them with many fish, but have yet to put 2 of them together. I have a very small ornate baby that I’m going to try to introduce to the big guy, once I determine how he will react and all of that. One that I gave my friend has been taught to eat goldfish, but mine rarely eats the fish. He prefers pellets. I like that better, it is too messy when they eat fish. They only eat parts of them and it’s gross. They are messy, messy, messy as it is. Ruins my tanks and filters often. Good luck with your Turdy! Hi Jbirdee, Do you have your pictures posted on the group site? Since you are in Cocoa Beach, all your terrapins should technically be Florida East Coast. Yes, we are on the East Coast as well. We are actually in Merritt Island, right next to Cocoa Beach. Turdy took right to Reptomin unti I got suggestions from here to switch to Jumbomin. I have searched and could not find Jumbomin so I use Wardley reptile premium mix and every few days I give him Wardley Turtle delight. Just recently I added feeder fish to his tank and he is having a little bit of a hard time catching them but he seems to be having a fun time trying. I watched him catch one this morning and it was quite a site. I have also been giving him frozen fish about once a week and he loves that. jbirdee – I can’t believe you are so close. What a small world. I am also surprised your 4 yr old is 4″. Turdy is already measuring 3 1/2″. Is that unusual for Turdy to be so big already?
