Hi everyone, I want to know if any one has had problems with their terrapins getting blisters/canker sores, mainly on the beak (the outside of the upper and lower lips). It starts out as a small white spot and then it gets a little bigger before it becomes a hole and doesn’t seem to heal. I’ve only seen this on yearlings, not adults. They were in fresh water, but now I have them in brackish. Their diet is a variety of pellets and cuttle bone once in a while. Any recommendation on the type of treatment from anyone? Comments and experiences are welcome. Thank you all, Jim

Yes mine got this unusual problem, gosh about 3 months ago. It affected 1 then 2 then 3 of my terrapins. The first one has a scar from it the other 2 I got in time. I soaked in pima fix, then I dry docked them 3 times a day with betadine or iodine placed directly on the blister then allowing it to sit dry on the area for at least 3 hours. I had to isolate all 3 from the other DBT’s and I also isolated the ones affected. Once spotted I caught it quickly with the other 2, they healed in a week with no scars. The initial one does have a scar and took the longest to heal. But I used a cycle: Medicate blister, dry dock, then an inch or two of fresh water to drink, then I medicated the water with pimafix. While in the water, I gave them a basking light and an area to crawl out on. While they were dry docked I kept a heat lamp only on one half of their container because they seemed to get very cold when dry docked. I repeated this process three times daily and it worked great. Mine were yearlings when this happened. Good luck, Lisa

Hi Lisa, Thanks for the info. I went and got the PimaFix. Hopefully that’ll work. I have used betadine before, but didn’t seem to do that job. Thanks again, Jim — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “Lisa Lee”
