Hi, I’m getting some Dbt’s that are wild caught. What would happen if i raise them in fresh water instead of brackish water??? Right now i have 3 dbt’s that are in fresh water.. can they be converted to brackish water??? thanks. JOHN

Hi Folks, I’d like to add my 2 cents on the brackish debate. Here in South Jersey (and no doubt else-where) we have Diamondbacks that are native to salt, brackish and fresh water. The barrier islands are on (in) the ocean, plenty of salt water here. Plenty of DBT’s also. Further inland up the rivers, Great Egg, Mullica, Tuckahoe, etc., the water is brackish, and eventually fresh. Plenty of DBT’s here also. Since the rivers flow directly into the back bays, and are tidal, these turtles share both environments…salt and brackish. There are several freshwater lakes that ultimately feed into these rivers, and there are DBT’s in these also. So it seems to me that the freshness of, or the salinity of the water is not a great environmental factor for this particular species, since they seem to thrive in all 3 conditions. Conversely I have NEVER seen fresh water turtle species (painted, sliders, snapping, etc.) in anything BUT fresh water. This raises an interesting point about how critical is salinity to the good health of our DBT’s. I do agree some salt might help with the control of bacteria and/or other germs, pathogens, etc., but I wonder how much concern or overall impact it really does have. Your comments, opinions, and observations please.
