Hi, i know there’s a debate about fresh vs brackish, so i’ve sorta settled on “mostly brackish with part fresh” by mixing bottles of water i collected in a chincoteague river channel sorta thing, to some part fresh water. I’m going to run out of the bottled water soon, and i was wondering what products/techniques everyone uses to keep their tanks salty? My local pet store carries cichlid salt, which would be the product i’d use when i need to.
Hi, I try to stay out of the debates when it comes to fresh water vs brackish. Personal I leave all my hatchlings in fresh water mainly because when I sell them most people tend to want them to come from fresh water. As for my adults I use rock salt, which are be found at the super market for are $2.00 for five pounds. I mix in about four cups for in every hundred gallon tank I have. Feel free to keep the questions coming. Jonathan I personally believe that they need to be kept in brackish water due to the simple fact that, in the wild, they only live in brackish water. I know we have people who testify that they have done it both ways or either way and never have had any problems but I just believe that since they live there, I should try to match their natural habitat to the best of my ability.
