i keep it in very slightly saltly water, so goldfish couldn’t live in that. also, i am in the process of a move and don’t have a filter. i plan on just changing the water very frequently. how often should i change it (some turtles like slightly dirty water) and what do i do about fish in the tank? it is only a ten gallon tank.

You’re not gonna be able to keep a DBT in a 10 gallon very long. If you’re only gonna have one or two, you need at LEAST a 40 gallon breeder tank or bigger. Also, if it’s captive-bred you don’t need salt at all. Usually, only wild-caught need that, and more and more acquiring wild-caught DBTs is either illegal or at least a moral no-no. Also, you MUST get a filter. There’s no way you’ll keep up water changes that frequently. Eventually you’ll tire of it and you’ll either have to get the filter or the turtle will suffer. I don’t know of any turtles that “like” dirty water. Where did you hear that one? How would anybody know what a turtle likes anyway? You’re gonna have to invest some $$$ up front on your pet to keep it properly… Walt G. —–Original Message—– From: nikkicoco11 [mailto:nikkicoco11@…] Sent: Tuesday, July 16, 2002 11:35 AM To: diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com Subject: [diamondbackterrapins] but…….one small problem i keep it in very slightly saltly water, so goldfish couldn’t live in that. also, i am in the process of a move and don’t have a filter. i plan on just changing the water very frequently. how often should i change it (some turtles like slightly dirty water) and what do i do about fish in the tank? it is only a ten gallon tank. Goldfish actually will do fine in slightly saltly water. If you don’t have a filter setup and you are feeding the terrapin in the water I would change it at least every three days. Terrapins can NOT live in dirty water. They will develop gray/white patches on their skin if the water gets to dirty. I have seen this several times with CB hatchlings. Good luck on the move Jonathan Scute Mod http://www.geocities.com/diamondbackterrapins — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “nikkicoco11”
