I have a male DBT and a female RES in the same tank. Over the holidays, the kids were yelling that the DBT’s tail was stuck in the RES’s shell. Well, after all the commotion, and the DBT withdrew (or was yanked out) I realized they were mating. I don’t want any clutches between these two or have to remove eggs from the water and dispose of them. Will the mating cause the RES to lay eggs? Can they be viable between the two species? If they DID hatch, what kind of mutant cross-species would be produced?? I really don’t want any of this to happen… Thanks, Walt

We know of one viable hybrid between a dbt and a map species hatching and growing to adult size. But I think a RES is too far apart genetically from a dbt to result in anything viable. However, the dbt male may continue the pursuit of the female RES in the absence of a female of his own kind. I have males that pursue other males in the absence of females. You may need to consider other housing arrangements, at least for temporary breaks. Todd Glaeser Walt-P55431

How often will he try to mate her? All the time? Certain times of the year? It’s kinda funny, because he’s WAY smaller than her, but he gets the job done… —–Original Message—– From: Todd Stockwell [mailto:oxdrover2002@…] Sent: Thursday, January 02, 2003 11:25 AM To: diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [diamondbackterrapins] Can DBT successfully mate with RES?
