Hello all, I’m fairly new to turtles. I’ve raised and bred fish lots in the past but turtles… no. I have 2 (6-8″) female RES right now and I’m thinking of getting some chesapeake diamondback terrapins to learn from and eventually breed (hopefully). In order to help me find me the perfect turtles, I have some questions for the group. I hope someone out there can help me. The space in my place is limited so I don’t want to obtain some really cool turtles and then have to find homes for them because they are not appropriate to breed. I realize that once they are breeding I will need space for the offspring before finding homes for them. And this I am totally prepared to do and look forward to doing. The whole breeding aspect has enticed me for it seems like ages now. Ever since I worked for Pisces here in Calgary and reading about and passing on info to clients on the subject of “my reptile layed eggs, now what?”. The concentric diamondbacks first caught my eye as “the turtle” but then how does one import one into Alberta? I haven’t found any canadian breeders and the CFIA rep for alberta is a real stickler when it comes to importing turtles from other countries. Basically it is illegal to import any turtle into alberta due to salmonella concerns. Like I’m gunna lick my turtle… I’m AHT trained… I know all about salmonella… but thats besides the point. So, in my search I found a breeder in Montreal that breeds Northerns that carry the chesapeake gene. she’s hoping to have chespeake offspring coming in august. The chesapeakes are beautiful as well. I think they could be “the ones”. This is something I want to do right, but i need help learning how and what right is… any takers? Ok here are my basic questions to start: What is the genetics for the chesapeake pattern? If you breed 2 phenotypic chesapeake’s will the offspring carry the same phenotype? Or will some or all have the regular northern colouration. And then another question: Should one breed siblings (2 turtles that came from the same mother and father?) not recommended in most breeding programs for mammals but I don’t know turtles well enough yet to say the same holds true. I believe to ensure proper genetic diversity (and to avoid genetically based health issues) one should breed only animals that are related by only one parent at the most. Does this sound right? if this is the case one would need to find 2 turtles of the same round about age (same species of course) and hope they get along well enough and long enough to breed. Any pointers on this aspect?Well that should let you know where I’m coming from and hopefully start me along my learning curve. I really appreciate anyone out there who can help me out. hi there Steven (and all), Thanks for the prompt reply! I figured as much on the sibling thing… HELP!!! Anyone out there have or know of any chesapeake (or concentric) breeders willing and able to ship to Calgary, AB Canada? Also… Anyone have any experience breeding 2 concentrics or 2 chesapeakes? I’m looking to hear how the genetics are passed on. Is it on a single gene like human eye colour in the fact that brown eyed people can be either Bb or BB… thus half of their offspring or all of it respectively could have brown eyes. eg. lets say chesapeake is cc while normal is Cc or CC. (Big C is dominant so would show that phenotype or physical appearance) therefore if chesapeake is cc (double recessive), then all of the offspring from a mother that is chesapeake (cc) would have a small c given to them if the father was chesapeake also… then the babes would all be cc. but if the father was only a carrier or Cc (mom cc) then only half of the babes would be chesapeake… half would get is big C (making Cc) and half would get his small c (making cc or chesapeake). but what if the father didn’t have any chesapeake… CC (mom still cc). Then none of the offspring would be chesapeake… Cc.It may not be this simple… there might be several genes accounting for the chesapeake colouration… HELP!!! does anyone know or have experience with these guys? I just joined the group last week and have already learned quite a bit about the diamondback tarrapin. I currently have a Fly River Turtle, an African Sideneck and a softshell. Im not new to turtles, I have had them for years. I have been looking all over in California and emailed some breeders with no luck or response for chesapeake and concentric diamondback terrapin. I want a male and a female. Do you know of any breeders here in the US that i can contact. I have done some research and im really interested in these turtles and they seem like a turtle i could really enjoy for years to come. Please any help Thank you in advance, Josh — Stephen Chew
