This morning I found one of my Red Eared Sliders Roxxanne had died. She was a Slider that was given to me by a person who could no longer keep it. The Slider was 8 yrs old and always appeared healthy. I found it floating in the water. What was odd was that it had bulging and swelling around it’s hind legs and tail. It looked as if it’s back end was about to burst. Does anyone have any idea what illness this may have been? BTW, I already buried the turtle, I was so grief stricken I couldn’t think of any other thing to do.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. I’m not a Vet, but the first thing that comes to mind is possibly eggs she couldn’t expel or some other obstruction (like a large piece of gravel?) that caused more serious complications. From what I’ve heard, if a turtle has an internal problem, it doesn’t always show up with easily seen symptoms, like a shell or eye problem does. Don’t beat yourself up, I’m sure you took great care of her, and it wasn’t your fault.
