Hello group! I have some terrible news. One of my dbt eggs was caving in greatly and was close to hatching so I decided to cut the egg to give it some breathing room. The shell was caved in a bit, but I figured it would pop back out now that it had breathing room. The bad part is (after looking closely) it is badly disfigured. The poor thing only has a bottom jaw. It’s very sad to see and is still alive. I’m wondering if the only thing keeping it alive is the egg sack. Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

Sorry to hear about the hatchling – have never encountered this before in all my years of breeding. I don’t see how it could possibly survive once the yolk sac is used up. I bet you’re looking forward to the rest of the clutch hatching though! -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, stephen fedele

Chun, The poor thing finally died. This has been a terrible year for my dbt eggs. I had to move before the females laid there eggs and put a lot of stress on them. Plus I didn’t have the right facilities to house them, on top of that I had temp. swings from loosing power from Tropical storm Cindy. Now I had to move the eggs because of Hurricane Kitrina. Thanks for responding! Steve Stephen Chew

Steve, I feel for you! Egg production over here on the west coast was depressed to say the least, so we can relate on that end. We’ve been surprisingly fortunate though, natural disaster-wise, what with sitting right on top of the San Andreas Fault and all. I think we’ve all gotten over the low production and are already looking forward to next year in the hopes of a more productive year. Hope yours is a good in all aspects! -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, stephen fedele
