I have a female Diamond back for about 5 years. The first year I got her she laid a few eggs and then mothing after that. This year I put two males with her . One was a year old in august and the other one I got was already mature. I have never seen them mate but my young male is very attentive to the female , he follows her all over the tank. My female laid 9 eggs so far. Could they be fertile will she lay eggs that are not fertile. And I can’t believe she laid eggs now. I know it is not the mating season but since they are kept indoors maybe that is why. Anyone that could give me insight to this it would be helpful. I have box turtles and I know their mating habits and when my female will lay eggs. This is my first experience with dbt how long is incubation for dbt, box turtles is about 90 days. thanks for any help. Maryann

Ok, About the Eggs. Were they laid in the water? Usually if eggs are laid in the water it means that she doesn’t have and land or sandy area to lay her eggs so she chooses the water. In which case you should find them and remove them within the first couple hours or the egg will die. The only way to know if it is fertilize is if there is a sticky yellow goo on the egg when you remove it from the tank. That of course would be from your males. They fertilize the eggs after it is laid from what i have experiance in the past. If you do find eggs that are recent and covered in goo…then you must remove them and keep them in a warm location usually surronded by moss or sand or something, and pretty moist. And DO NOT MOVE OR ROTATE THEM. Rotating them is bad. All my knowledge I got when my Mud turtle laid eggs….and the Daddy was my Terrapin, of course the eggs were not fertile, im guessing the 2 species could not produce a furtle egg. So now im getting a female terrapin to breed with him. If you have any other Questions ask, and im sure other people on here may know more about the terrapin hatching. Have fun! -Eric

From what I know the eggs are not fertileize on the outside they have a regular mating. Only male fish and maybe frogs fertilize eggs after laid.
