Firstly I find this site very helpful and I thank everyone for their advice. I found a hatchling DBT and have been taking care of it for two weeks. The turtle has been doing well. It is very happy and active climbing in the plastic plants, swimming around and basking under the lamp. In I have a herp bulb and a heater set at 78. I also keep a turtle water neutralizer in the water. I have an aquaclear30 and change the water weekly. I have been feeding three or four small crickets almost every day. I keep feeder guppies in the tank which the turtle will go for and eat on occasion. I am trying pellets and dried shrimp. So in the last couple of days the turtle started this behavior where it will puff its neck out kind of like a frog. I thought it was a defensive posture trying to make it look bigger but I noticed that it will sit and breath on occasion by puffing its neck. Could this be a health problem. Thanks Vince

That behavior is absolutely normal. I see my diamondbacks doing it all the time. What type of herp light do you have over the basking area? It is UVB and heat? Michaela Mullen — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “celestron10ngt”

Hi Vince The funny breathing method you see should be called “Gular Pumping”. Your DBT control the muscle on his neck and pumping air into the lung for breathing. Many turtles do this and it’s nothing bad. There will be some problem if you discover the little guy open his mouth during breathing~ Thanks Gourry To: diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.comFrom: celestron10ngt@…Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2008 01:20:51 +0000Subject: [diamondbackterrapins] DBT Possible health issue? I cant recall the brand but I am aware about the UVB issue. I use one of the reflector fixtures. I also use the same on my painted turtle. Anyone recommend a good bulb. Vince
