Hi all, I am a lurker here. I currently have 3 diamondbacks. 2 female northerns and a male Florida variety that is orange and has a nice keel to his shell. Anyway, I feed them a base diet of mostly Reptomin. I also feed some Rep-Cal Aquatic turtle pellets and some Nasco Turtle Brittle. Oh, and recently I got some Hikari Cichlid Gold that someone here recommended. What else should I be feeding them to vary their diet? I think that most of the stuff listed above most likely are very similar in make-up. I have, in the past bought some frozen krill for them. Should I get some dried krill? I have stayed away from Goldfish as I have heard about their capacity to have parasites and that they are not that nutricious. How about a listing of the various things everyone feeds their turtles in order of most often fed to rarely fed??? Chun-Ming ChewOctober 21, 2002 at 8:16 am #17899Hi Carole, I feed mainly Aquamax as a staple for my adults, followed by cooked shrimp, smelt, rosies and periwinkles. For my hatchlings, I plan on feeding Hikari Cichlid Gold as the staple, followed by plankton, bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp and later guppies. I disagree though that all foods are created equal. Compare the protein and ash content of your prepared foods and you will see that Reptomin is pretty much junk compared to the rest. -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “Reptileszz”
ReptileszzOctober 21, 2002 at 8:21 am #17900Hi, forgive me here, but if Reptomin is junk why do so many people recommend it? Where does one get Aquamax from? I still have yet to see it. Is that the one that got bought out by Mazuri? I had some of that but I ran out. Perhaps I should get more. I have spotted turtles that will only eat Reptomin. When I have fed other pellets they refuse them all and all they do is go into the filter. Ya know, I am not a huge fan of Tetra Terrafauna. I wonder why I never thought about the reptomin being crap. Sooo many people use it. Pethaps we have all been suckered. Carole PS thanks for the list of food items. Where does one get cooked shrimp at a reasonable price? Chun-Ming ChewOctober 21, 2002 at 9:14 am #17901I have never tasted Reptomin myself but I have a sneaky suspicion that it is very palatable. I think that’s why so many people use it – that plus the fact that it was probably one of the earliest turtle foods out on the market. But I dare anyone to read the ingredients of Reptomin and continue to claim that it is quality food! Aquamax is the new name for Trout Chow, and yes, it is now put out by Mazuri. It is normally found in feed stores as is Mazuri’s Turtle Chow. Mazuri is supposedly the staple food fed in zoos. I am able to obtain frozen cooked shrimp, shell on for $2.99/lb. here in Southern California from a local grocery chain called 99 Ranch Market. I get my smelt and periwinkles there too. Smelt goes for $1.50/lb. while the periwinkles sell for $3.99/lb. Not bad considering that Reptomin is ~$10/lb.! -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “Reptileszz”
