I have a 1″ Northern diamondback that won’t accept any kind of food sticks unless it’s red in color. It likes the TetraFauna ReptoTreat pellets(red). It won’t accept the ReptoMin(green). I want it to eat the Reptomin since it has calcium in it. What can I do? Also, how do you use cuttlebone? Are they supposed to chew on it or is it supposed to dissolve in the water?
Todd StockwellNovember 21, 2003 at 6:05 pm #19160I’ve seen this fixation on red in a few of my hatchlings. They eventually outgrew it as they got bigger and scooped in more pellets at finding time. Although the green Baby Reptomin is generally very palatable to most hatchlings, you could offer T-Rex Juvenile or Flukers pellets which each have half of their pellets red to get your little guy onto a more complete pellet diet. You might also try red Hikari Gold Cichlid pellets, baby or juvenile sized, which should be available at most aquarium shops. A number of keepers use Hikari exclusively and swear by it. Cuttlebone is for the turtles to bite to keep their beaks in shape. I just toss in a piece. Some keepers peel the backing off. Calcium blocks meant for birds also work or you can make your own blocks from plaster. Or if you buy a Dr. Turtle sulfa block which is a plaster block in the shape of a turtle (not necessarily recommended), most turtles will happily chomp that up! Todd marcusk_408
Burnley, CharlesNovember 21, 2003 at 6:06 pm #19161Hi, Don’t know what to say about the color selection, but the cuttlebone I think I can help you with. I get the style that is used for bird cages. Real cheap at Wal-mart. I use a single edge razor blade and cut slices off the soft side and then dice these pieces into approx 1/8″ chunks. I then throw these into the tank. They float. Asbury loves them. She’ll pick them off the surface of the water and chomp on them until she can swallow. If I put food and the cuttlebone in the water at the same time she would go for the cuttlebone first. So I usually always give it to her seperately. I do this about once a week, and still have about half of the block remaining. Hope this helps.
