Hello. I’m new to the group. I joined last week after purchasing 3 beautiful hatchlings from Jonathan. I have 3 other turtles (1-RES and 2-Peninsula Cooters) that I’ve had for over a year now. So I’m not new to turtles, but I am new to DBTs. I have a question about aquarium heaters. I ordered a 50 watt Ebo Jager for the new tank I set up for the hatchlings. The Web site where I bought it said it’s a submersible heater, but when I received it yesterday, it has a water level mark at the top of the glass. I emailed the store to find out if they had sent the wrong model and here’s what they said: “The Ebo Jager Heaters are the same construction as always. Since the ones we offer are now UL Listed they have placed a maximum water level line on the heater to comply with the UL Listing. The heaters will not malfunction if completely submersed since they are no different than the ones Ebo has always produced as submersible. If you would like to maintain the UL Listing compliance and do not wish to submerse them we can accept them back if you would like to return them.” Does this sound right to you guys? I don’t want to electrocute my babies. This one has a blue dial at the top where you adjust the temperature. The submersible model I’ve seen online is all black. I’d appreciate any comments/suggestions. Thanks,Melanie East TN

Hmm… I would probably get either my money back and find a submergable heater else where, or complain to the corporation and ask them to give you the newer model that you’ve seen advertised, and the one you originally thought that you bought.“Peckham, Melanie L.” David Hubbard AMERICORPS MEMBER (928)-632-8036 (928)-848-1357 hubbarddavidlee@… Yahoo! All Ebo Jagers are submersible. The old ones were green, the new ones have a blue dial on the top. Not sure what you saw that was all black, Visitherm has an all black heater. —–Original Message—–From: David Hubbard “Peckham, Melanie L.” David Hubbard AMERICORPS MEMBER (928)-632-8036 (928)-848-1357 hubbarddavidlee@… Yahoo! Hi, I’m also new to the group, and purchased a Diaomondback from Johanthan which just arrived yesterday. I’ve kept turtles or tortoises of one kind or another for most of the past forty years, but haven’t had an aquatic turtle for at least 15 years. Currently I breed Cherryhead Redfoot tortoises. If anyone is interested to see it I’ll put a link to my webpage. I’m originally from Virginia and I remember seeing Diamondbacks in their natural environment in Virginia Beach, and also in Northeast North Carolina’s outer banks. Mostly I’d see them basking, in particular a couple of times when I was crabbing with some friends. I’ve always admired them though never kept one, and decided to take the plunge after seeing Johnathan’s website. A couple of quick questions. Are Diamondback surface feeders and just as likely to eat something like floating pellets, or are they more likely to bottom feed, and what can be feed to them that would sink to the bottom? When mine is on the bottom he appears to be engaging in foraging behavior. Am I likely to have any success taking this hatchling out of his tank and putting him in something like a rubbermaid container or a five gallon just to feed? I’d like to avoid feeding him in his main tank as much as possible. I have him in a 20 gallon high. http://www.zabludow.com/redfootpage.html Thanks, Tilford

Hi Tilford, and welcome to the group! Diamondbacks are naturally foragers but they can be trained to easily to eat off the surface of the water. Most c.b. specimens in fact eat pellets off the surface but will also take pellets that sink to the bottom if provided. many pellets available for cichlids sink to the bottom. I feed all of mine exclusively in a separate container but there can be a brief period of adjustment before they become accustomed to feeding in an environment other than their tank. Cherry redfoots are one of my favorite tortoises – I hope to get some someday when my schedule is less prohibitive. Cheers. -Stephen — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Tilford Bartman
