Hi everyone, My female just layed an egg in the water (as many thought she would) It was in the water for no more than 15 minutes as I’ve been checking on her constantly because I was expecting her to lay soon. The egg is pinkish with a disk that I presume is the embryo on one side and a larger yolk? on the other side. Is there anyway to determine if it is viable? I already have it in a hova-bator which, quite luckily, arrived today as well. When they lay in the water do they usually all come out at the same time? I do volunteer work on Thursday nights, but Idon’t want to leave if she’ll probably lay the rest tonight.
They will normally drop a few eggs each day. I can take around week for them to drop them all. I can’t say I can tell for sure each time a egg is laid if it is good. They should turn white after a few days if they don’ t then they are most likely not good. Jonathan http://www.diamondbackterrapin.comjonnyk22222
Any way you can take her to a sandy or dirt area and let her nest? This will beat retrieving eggs from the water any day since she will otherwise drop them in the water over a period of several days to weeks. A couple of Jonathan’s females have even nested in a playground that was topped with wood shavings and I’ve seen a documentary of a terrapin in New Jersey diggin a nest in dirt that was covered with lava rock in a residential yard. The process of nesting in itself is very interesting, so it’s the best option for you in my opinion. Otherwise, you could also consider a veterinarian administered injection of oxytocin to induce as her. This can be risky at times for the eggs but at least you’ll be able to control when and where she drops the eggs. All the best. -Chun
