I remember being told that certain media don’t need to be changed as often as it is adivsed on the media boxes. I have an AquaClear. Should I change my media as often as it says to, or will some be okay left in the filter for a longer time?
John OchSeptember 30, 2008 at 11:08 am #22182I haven’t had an AquaClear in a long time but if I remember correctly, the media was just a coarse sponge and you could add a sack of carbon etc for some chemical filtration. The sponge was the bio and mechanical filter so you had to clean it out when you noticed the water flow being reduced. There was no bio wheel. The sponges last forever and ever…I still have a couple that I re-purposed in other filters. I Don’t do any mechanical filtration myself. Really, how often you replace or clean ultimately depends on the load you are placing on it…how many or how large a turtle on what size of tank kind of thing.-John
heather polechioSeptember 30, 2008 at 11:22 am #22183so to chime in….- I have two aquaclears ( and they are great!!)- I believe basically the way they work is – – You always want to have three forms of um.. whats the word…. well you have a sponge, a bag of carbon and a bag of biological inserts ( biomax)- when you clean you want to always leave either the sponge or the biomax alone to allow water quality to stay where it needs to be- One month clean sponge ( in tank water- not tap) leave biomax- the next replace biomax and leave sponge always changing the carbon– does that make any sense??- YOu just want to make sure and keep bacteria so that the tank does not have to re-cycle itself every time you clean- this way allows for some form of bacteria to remain in the system, but still clean properly.– I believe this is the idea behind the aquaclear filters- please someone kindly correct me if I am wrong or explained this wrong- I have been doing it this way for awhile with great results! -Heather
