Hi, I have a question regarding the algea buildup in my tank. Recently it as been more of a rust color than the typical green color. It started about 1 month ago. It doesn’t build up any faster, it’s just a brownish color. I’m a little concerned by that. I purchased a Magnum canister filter about 2 months ago, and it seems to work fine. The first month I used the charcoal-like media, but based on suggestions in this group I started using Seachem Matrix Bio Media. I don’t know if it’s related to that. I also have a Fluval 4 filter to help circulate, but it doesn’t have any bio or chemical filtration. The tank is about 60 gallons. I also put a few rocks/shells in the tank that I found at a beach (Southern California). I boiled them first. I don’t really check ph levels, and there’s no salt in the tank. Any ideas? Thanks. Sean
Hi Sean, The brown algae in your tank could possibly be the result of several things: increase in nitrate and silicate levels. Bio-load increases due to increased acitivity and food intake during the summer months will cause nitrate levels to increase. The Seachem Matrix Bio media will produce nitrates as well since that is the natural byproduct of any bio filter. The addition of rocks/shells could also increase your silicate levels which favor the formation of brown algae. All of which can remedied with more frequent water changes. Thanks. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t harmful. I spend so much time playing with and rearranging my tank, I wasn’t sure what I had done. Small world. Are you in academia, industry, biotech? Any affiliation with UCI?
