When the Terrapin Institute buys terrapins off the market the animals become our personal “live food” property. There are no requirements to eat them or regulations governing the disposal of them. When we release them to the wild or retain them for observation these animals or “live food” remain our personal property. All of ours are legally purchased, photographed, tagged, and recorded. We maintain a bill of sale or receipt for all animals. There may not be sufficient clarity in the law to protect our ownership rights once released to the wild, but we maintain the tagged terrapins are our private property regardless of location. Any eggs produced by these terrapins are assumed to be our personal property. We do not conduct any trade in our animals – we are strictly education, research, and conservation. We have no experience with purchase of captive bred animals.
