Attachments : —–Original Message—– From: Richard Stanley [mailto:stanleyrb1@…] Sent: Sunday, April 08, 2007 9:35 PM To: ‘cterrapin@yahoogroups.com’; Subject: Support for MD Terrapin Conservation Bill needed immediately Importance: High Until last week, we had a House Bill and Senate Bill that both permanently ended all future commercial harvests of diamondback terrapins in Maryland. Last week, the House Terrapin Bill (760) was amended during the Senate vote to allow continued harvests of diamondback terrapin to supply aquaculture operations. This aquaculture amendment was supported by every Republican Senator and 13 of the 33 Democratic Senators. If we carried 4 more votes, the amendment would not have passed. To counteract the ___aquaculture amendment,_ we had the Senate Terrapin Bill (532) amended during the House vote to allow aquaculture, but prohibiting any harvesting of terrapin to supply aquaculture (or for any other purpose). Under this amendment, which we are calling the ___breeding amendment,_ commercial harvesting is totally banned for any purpose and safeguards are put in place for breeding activities. The breeding amendment passed the House vote by 127-7. Our support on the House side is solid. When the breeding amendment is voted upon by the Senate on Monday, April 9, 2007, we need to make sure that at least 4 of the Senators who voted for the aquaculture amendment and continued harvests to supply aquaculture vote in favor of the breeding amendment, which bans all future diamondback terrapin harvests in Maryland. Here___s a list of the 13 Democratic Senators who voted for the aquaculture amendment. We believe they can be persuaded to vote in favor of the breeding amendment, which bans all future harvests of diamondback terrapins in Maryland. The legislative session ends for 2007 on Monday at midnight, so you quick action is critical. Astle John C.
