It has something to do with enabling their lungs to expand since they dont breathe in a “normal” mammal way – ie no diaphragm. I am not quite sure I understand it myself. Believe it or not I did once successfully bring a “drowned” spotted turtle back from the dead by spending about two hours pushing and pulling its little legs in and out. My wife thought I was crazy but it worked and is doing OK a year later. I was advised to keep it out of water for a while and watch for pneumonia. Hope this helps.
