——– Original Message ——– Subject: [Maturtlerescue] Red Ear sliders Date: Sun, 01 May 2005 20:25:07 -0400 From: Debbie Zajchowski Maturtlerescue@yahoogroups.com To: Maturtlerescue@yahoogroups.com, TurtleRescueLongIsland@yahoogroups.com Hi All, For those of us involved in organizational work, comes some hard reality. The work we do with turtles and tortoises is anything but glamourous, exciting, fun, and at times can be hugely daunting. No doubt turtle and tortoise work can bring about great happiness and be quite satisfying at times, but there are many aspects we face with no easy answer or solution. Many issues that we face daily in our work leads us to a thought process that many cannot comprehend. The issue of over-breeding of Red ear sliders is one of the most complex issues seen daily in this type of work and those that purchase them from food markets, pets stores, or the like often claim they have "rescued" the turtle. In turn, a great many of these individuals turn to rescue organizations for placement of their rescued turtle, in search of a good home, that essentially is non-existant. Many pet sliders are released to non-native habitats as well, leading to competition of resources. Releasing of pet turtles is illegal and brings about other challenges on the conservation arena. I ask that everyone please visit the following link and read the three documents presented there. Its important and will one day help us ease the problem of unwanted red ear sliders. http://maturtlerescue.org/red_eared_sliders.htm -- Debbie Director, Massachusetts Turtle Rescue, Inc. http://www.maturtlerescue.org Moderator for Massachusetts Turtle Rescue's Online Community http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Maturtlerescue/join Co-Owner of the North American Box Turtle Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NorthAmericanBoxturtle/join -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
