In my early days of turtle keeping malachite green was a common treatment. I never used it because of the stain and never knew it was carcinogenic. I recall it was readily available in pet stores. I don’t know if it’s still on the shelves, so I thought I would pass this along. Any thoughts. Cancer Agent Found in Korean Turtles
Domestic soft-shelled turtles have been found contaminated with the carcinogenic dye malachite green, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said Tuesday. The revelation comes on the heels of an uproar over news that the cancer agent was found in domestic freshwater fish. __We found malachite green at a turtle farm in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, and all shipments from the farm were immediately halted,__ said Lee Seon-jun, an official with the ministry. Authorities will inspect soft-shelled Turtles in the market in consultation with the Korea Food and Drug Administration. Lee said the ministry started checking 27 turtle farms out of 135 nationwide. If the dye, illegally used as a disinfectant at aqua farms, is widely found, all shipments of soft-shell turtles will be stopped. The ministry has been checking all fish farms for malachite green, but with only 47 testing kits, the investigation is progressing slowly. A total of 135 tons of soft-shell turtle was domestically produced last year, and another 222 tons imported. Wow, I never knew that, good to know! Now, what type of cancer does it cause on turtles/humans? Also, what are some good and strong gram negative/positive antibiotics are people using to treat their turtles/terrapins? I recently had a hatchling that is basking a lot and opening mouth gasping for air. I know it’s not bacterial and there are no signs of skin problem. I have tried Maracyn 2 with no success. Maracyn 2 has always worked for me, but doesn’t seem to be working on this type of virus. It’s not a temperature problem for sure. Thanks.
