Hello, I’ve just joined this group. I do not currently, nor have I ever, kept dbt’s, but I’m looking forward to my first experience. I feel confident that the information contained in these postings will go a long way towards insuring success. I have kept painted turtles in the past, as well as lots of fish (I currently have Tanganyikan cichlids) and snakes (I currently have three of these). I met someone in SC recently who owned a few dbt’s and instantly fell in love with them! They were the most beautiful turtle I had ever seen. I think this person had the Carolinian variety, so that is the subspecies I would like to start with. I really love the light colored shell with dark markings. I plan to house them in a 90 gallon tank and use very lightly salted water (nearly fresh). Now all I need to do is find someone with this variety for sale. What should I expect to pay for a handsome Carolinian hatchling? Is there anyone out there with ones for sale? Don’t make me go to the coast and find a few for myself (just kidding). Thanks…

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed – I’ve kept terps since ’95 and am constantly learning something new. No argument there! They go for $75-$100 as hatchlings. Adults/juveniles command at least twice as much. They’re seasonal so I don’t think anybody has any at the moment. However, they’ll probably begin to be offered the end of this month or early next. BTW, if you ever see terps in the wild, please post your field experiences. Only a few of us in this group have actually had the privilege of seeing wild terps. Cheers! Chun Tail Moderator
