with mention of graptemys… Does anyone have experience with them enough to know which of the subspecies will handle my North Carolina winters outdoors? I like the striking body of the knobbed sawbacks, but am unsure of the cold hardiness of the subspecies. I’ll have plenty of water depth, and winters here occasionally drop a little snow, rarely drop a lot of snow, and are usually in the 40’s daytime with probably a month of nights below freezing.

Nathan, I don’t think that any would have a problem with your winters. They are quite hardy. Dom

Water depth is necessary for most graptemys to thrive. And if outside the tub must be burried in the ground or heated just not on top of the ground. Black knobs only exist below the fall line naturally and live in free-flowing rivers 6ft-40ft deep. BBM
