for some reason, over the past month or so our tank water has become really green. like, lime green. we thought it might be because we’d been out of town, and had let the pet sitter feed terrance, our dbt, in the tank so when we got back a couple of weeks ago we took out all the green water, scrubbed everything with salt (“instant ocean”) and refilled tank with brackish (“instant ocean” – half strength) water. now, two weeks later, it’s completely green again.does anyone know why this is happening and how we can stop it? and, more importantly, is it bad for terrance? so far he doesn’t seem to mind but I’m afraid he’ll get a fungal infection or something 🙁 thanks for any advice!Nicole (and Terrance)

MR C BURNLEYJuly 27, 2014 at 8:27 pm #23342Nicole, Don’t just clean the tank. Remove and discard the water and filter element. clean the glass with detergent and bleach. Thoroughly clean and flush/rinse or replace the bottom media (sand, stone, crushed coral, etc.). After cleaning the tank flush with fresh water until there is no odor of bleach remaining. Refill the tank and let run thru a new filter for 4 to 6 hours. Bring water to proper temp. Re-introduce Terrance and monitor daily. How old is he and is this the first time you have ever had this problem?I have had Asbury for over 10 years and try to do this maintenance every 6 months or so. He is in a 60 gallon tank. I also weaned him to fresh water and use no salt (we have well water, not city chemically treated crap). Let me know how you make out.
