Hello All My name is W.D. Ray and reside in Charleston, SC. I rescued a Carolina Diamondback Terrapin last week from a pool’s filter pump basket; I thought it was dead but it slowly came around in my hand. Anyways, i got everything setup, nice setup for this little guy, I have everything it needs, but it has not eaten anything yet. It has only been in its new tank environment for a couple days, will it have to adjust to eat? My question: How do I get this hatchling to initially eat in the tank? I have tryed putting Reptomin baby turtle pellets near ‘Nesta’ in the water, but it hasn’t taken. It has been a little over a week and it has yet to eat. How can I kickstart its eating cycle. thanks for the help W.D. and ‘Nesta’

Also try live brine shrimp. Sometimes hard to find a place that carries them, but my experience is that no hatchling can resist them. Whenever I’ve had a turtle that won’t eat, I throw in some live crickets, never fails (you would want the smallest ones for a hatchling). You just want to make sure you start them on pellets as soon as you can so they get all the nutrients they need. Especially since your hatchling has been through a lot of stress (chlorine in the pool I assume?) , it is probably important to just get it eating something for now and worry about getting it on the best diet possible after you get it comfortable. The best way is to start with something live, then mix in the pellets so when they are on their little feeding frenzy they will get used to the taste of the pellets. Everyone seems to suggest Mazuri aquatic turtle pellets as a staple and I agree, although you want to mix it up too. Check out http://www.neoterrapin.com and http://www.diamonbackterrapin.com for tons of excellent information. Good luck!-ScottFrom: “dubsoccer8@…”

HI W.D. good rescue! when there is a turtle that wont eat, it is known to soak some pellets in some stinky tuna fish water it is packed in(not the oil). also coat it with some calicum poweder so it sticks, let dry over night and feed. also some live wiggly worms. the wiggling gets their response. if the little guy hasnt eatten in more than a week. i would soak in warmed unflavored childrens pedialyte 1/2 water + 1/2 pedialyte. add some organic carrot juice in there too(also warmed) to give the immune system a boost. it will also give energy so he can get his wits about him. good luck. ask any questions you feel needed.
