OK, I have another Hatchling question for everyone. The “psychic” breeder that I got this little guy from………..you know, the breeder that can tell whether it’s a boy or a girl right out of the shell (LOL!!!), tells me that he was a late hatch in the first week of October. Anyway, that’s what he told me over the phone before I actually got him. When I took him out of the box and measured him, he was not even an 1 1/4″ SCL. Granted, I’m very happy with him. He’s very healthy, active, and was eating fantastic right out of the box, but I still contacted the breeder to double check to see if I could get a more accurate birth or hatch date on this little guy. I got him Dec. the 28th and if he was hatched around Oct. the 1st, that would make him around 3 months old! Isn’t just barely over an inch terribly small at this age for a DB? The breeder re-confirmed that early October WAS his hatch date. I always thought that most DB hatchlings hit the one inch mark right around 3 or 4 weeks……..NOT 3 months! Do you think that this hatchling was somewhat of a “runt” and was getting pushed away from the food or something?? Anyway, how unusual is this? Has anyone seen tiny ones like this, or do you think the breeder is just mixed up on his dates?
Stephen ChewJanuary 9, 2008 at 12:02 pm #21655Runts are common in terrapin clutches. I currently have one on hand that is just slightly bigger than yours but a month older. The rest of its siblings are ~2-2.5″. So yours could be a runt or Steve could be purposely feeding them lightly due to space constraints. -Stephen C — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “jimbo_craig”
