Hello all, I’m new to this group and have a question. My hatchling texan, which i’ve had since wednesday, is worrying me a little. All he does is hang out in the water, on a plastic plant i’ve purchased, and sleeps, most of the time with his head underwater. He has been eating, which is a good sign, but the constant sleeping and lethargy are worrying me. I haven’t seen him bask yet either. I keep him in an 18 gallon tank with no substrate, some plastic plants, one of those floating turtle docks, and a tetratec filter. The filter isn’t creating too much of a current, and i have a 100w basking bulb combined with a UVA/UVB compact flourescent light. Water temp is 80-82. Anyone have any advice or am i being a nervous nelly? I think i’m worried because i tried to raise a southern painted hatchling once and he ended up dying, while displaying a few of the same symptoms. Thanks! Aaron

Hi Aaron…what are you feeding him and what is the temperature of the basking site? How often is he eating? rcftx. —————————————————-This mailbox protected from junk email by Matadorfrom MailFrontier, Inc. http://info.mailfrontier.com

He is probably ok..however I would change his diet…get him on tetra cichlid JumboMin sticks..it has more nutritional value. Also feed him some gutt loaded crickets and live guppies. I think he will perk up…it appears your other conditions seem on the mark. rcftx —————————————————-This mailbox protected from junk email by Matadorfrom MailFrontier, Inc. http://info.mailfrontier.com

would i feed him the live guppies and crickets by hand? i don’t think he could catch a guppie.

tear off the back legs of the cricket and dust it with repcal (calcium supplement). Upon placing the small fry guppies into his feeding bowl…you should quickly pinch their head so he will have no problem catching them. —————————————————-This mailbox protected from junk email by Matadorfrom MailFrontier, Inc. http://info.mailfrontier.com
