I have a couple health related questions. I recently purchased 2 WC Diamondbacks. Last week 1 started to not use its front legs when swimming. Seems somewhat labored in attempting to leave water and especially avoids using one the left leg. This week she seems to be having difficulty withthe left rear also. Very short delicate storks when swimming. Its almost like shes paralized. No swelling or skin problems. Wondering if it bites from other terrapin? Suggestions? Second, have a painted turtle that was found today bitten by a dog, 3 holes in shell. Cance of survival? Any suggestions? Thanks Robert

Robert I have observed the symptoms described and in our case they were connected with a respiratory condition – easily resolved with Baytril. Apparently, a nerve is affected by the condition which renders the front legs immobile. Our vet prescribed .1 ml Baytril per day for 10 days. All is well with our terp treated. Apparently, respiratory disease is common in wild-caught animals brought into captivity, perhaps due to capture methods or change in water chemistry.
