I recently adopted a diamondback that has had a severe birth defect since birth. She cannot swim and must stay in shallow water. Her previous owner kept her in a 30 gallon tank with 2 inches of water and I teaspoon of aquarium salt. Since she has been with me she has developed a yellowish break out on her limbs. I bought a pH test kit and got the water up to 7.5 in both her filtered tank and her pond. Questions 1 now that the water is right will the break out’s clear up? 2 Can you switch a turtle that has lived in salted water for 15 years to fresh water? any and all advice is appreciated. This beautiful girl has suffered enough. I forgot to introduce Myself 🙂 my name is Amanda Ebenhack. I live in Florida with my husband, 3 kids and multiple turtles and torts. we have a small rescue and we rehab and adopt out a lot of chelonians, lizards, and snakes. I have NO experience with diamondbacks and look forward to learning all I can about them. Amanda
ReptileszzDecember 1, 2001 at 6:49 am #16351Hi Amanda, welcome to the list. I, too am a relative newbie to the DBT. Someone here will answer your question. They are very knowledgeable! Tim LibertDecember 1, 2001 at 10:59 am #16352Hi Amanda, I believe it is quite possible to switch the water habitat of the DBT as they are extremely tolerant of water changes. In fact PH can vary quite a bit. In the natural they move from fresh H2O (around 6.5) to ocean H2O (around 8.0). The main consideration will be to watch the feeding habits. If she eats OK there should be no problems. Another thing to keep in mind is that the salt will help kill some bacteria if you choose to go that route. Is your DBT getting out of the water? The yellow “break” (I have seen on mine is an infection and should be treated aggressively. Take her out of the water and let her dry out for a while every day or so. Remove the yellow skin and put on some Betadine. That should clear it up. Make sure she has a basking area with a UV light. Good luck, Tim Thanks and all the best, Tim _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
draybar@aol.comDecember 1, 2001 at 11:23 am #16353Hi Amanda, Welcome to the wonderful world of Diamondbacks. Once you have one you will never be without again. You will find them to be very outgoing, intelligent, obviously beautiful and just fun turtles to keep. Just a note to the members here that might not know Amanda from some of the other lists. She just became the first person, ever, to score a perfect 100% on her Rehabber’s license test. It will be just a matter of time before we are asking her advise on Diamondback care. Jimmy

Amanda It is not so much the fact that you ask a lot of questions...It is that you ask the RIGHT questions and learn from what experienced persons have to share. That combined with your true concern, common sense and obvious intelligence. Jimmy Ok I will stop embarrassing you now....LOL
