I took the DBT AND the tapeworm to the vet last week. This is a local vet who is proficient at treating birds, reptiles, etc. in addition to dogs and cats. She said the turtle needs Droncet but she didn’t carry the kind necessary to treat my turtle. She’s been trying (without success) to get the correct medication from another doctor. She said if she has to order a big bottle just to treat MY turtle it would be very expensive… 1)Does anyone know of a good herp vet on the Eastern shore of Maryland? 2) I believe generic Droncet can be purchased w/o a prescription; its called Praziquantel. If I could get it, how would I give it to the turtle? And how would I know the dosage? I believe the turtle weighs about 6.8 grams. Thanks for any advice, Kathleen

Thanks to all!! As usual I got EXACTLY the information I needed from this amazing group. The vet in Easton is the one I was looking for but couldn’t remember his name. And Karen thanks for posting those three sites – awesome information! FYI, prior to taking my turt into the office I submitted a fecal sample (w/a visible worm section) and it came back negative for tapeworm! To the tune of $54.00! Vet’s office said its not unusual for tapeworm not to show up in fecal sample…. Also, a week or so back someone had posted a question about a stringy discharge. It was message #11093. From the description it sounds exactly like what my turtle has so you may want to pursue treatment. Kathleen — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, karen testa

You might want to have your vet contact Dr. Gold or Dr. Haskin of Chadwell Animal Hospital in Abingdon, 443-512-8338. Dr. Gold usually has most turtle drugs, don’t know about shipping smaller quatities, though, or how much it would cost. FYI, 6 grams is about a hatchling. 600 grams is slightly larger than a very big, heavy box turtle. 6 kg would be a decent sized snapper.
