Hello, I live in Southern California, where the weather is pretty consistent. However, it’s been colder than usual and my terrapin seems to be sleeping all day and rarely eating, which is alarming me as she loves to beg and eat. I want to say she’s hibernating perhaps? If anybody has any ideas regarding this, please let me know! I was thinking of setting up a little tank heater for her water temperature. Is this advisable? Thank you for any input! Karen DollJanuary 19, 2013 at 4:05 pm #23270Hi Alexie, I live in Southern California too and the weather has been colder than usual. Do you keep your DBT’s inside or outside? Mine are kept inside because I live in an apartment. They are in a stocktank with a water heater (heater shuts off when it reaches selected temps). My terrapins have not slowed down and are eating well. I believe some Californians keep their DBT’s outdoors during the winter and perhaps don’t use a heater? I’d like to learn more about how others are keeping theirs… Karen
Jonathan HelmsJanuary 19, 2013 at 4:54 pm #23271It has been colder than normal for a while now in LA. If you keep yours outside then they are definitely hibernating. I would feed them at all right now. I keep my turtles in the garage and these temps are keeping them much more inactive than normal. During hibernation they are never completely dormant. If your’s are inside your house then you might want to raise your water temperature. ThanksJonathanwww.diamondbackterrapin.com
josh_almeidaJanuary 19, 2013 at 5:50 pm #23272Jon what’s up I been slowing cloning your setup here in Canada. Would u think one 125 watt uvb uva light would be enough for each sand box basking area. Also do u run the uv water light all the time or just when it starts getting cloudy. Sent from Samsung Mobile ——– Original message ——–From: Jonathan Helms
Diamondback Terrapin WorldJanuary 19, 2013 at 6:18 pm #23273Glad to hear it. I hope your setup is going well.I run 100watt ZooMed PowerSun bulbs over the basking ramps and not so much over the sand boxes. I run my UV sterilizer all of the time.ThanksJonathan Diamondback Terrapin Worldwww.diamondbackterrapin.com Albino Planetwww.albinoplanet.com From: josh_almeida
