please help me! my female terrapin is having a bad case of shell rot. i took her to the local exotic veterinary clinic and all they gave me was an iodine solution and told me to keep her out of the water ten hourse once applied. there has to be some other type of treatment! i noticed that she is getting worse!
Hi, I have had some experience with some aggressive shell rot. What has always worked for me is to set up a small tank such as a rubbermaid container and put just enough water in there to cover the terrapin. (That way it isn’t too heavy for you lift and dump the water daily) Make sure that all the soft diseased material is scraped out and removed prior to this treatment. Then I would salt the water in that container to about 1.017 s.g. or higher. I would keep the terrapin in there for 12 hours of daylight and then dry tank her all through the night. Right before dry tanking, I would paint the affected area with the Betadine or Nolvasan if you can get it. Then just repeat this everyday. Change the water and re-salt it daily. Also, keep the water and the dry tank tank good and warm. (I usually put this in my garage). I would feed the terrapin well. This method should give you some fairly rapid healing. If you can get Nolvasan it will heal slightly faster than with the Betadine. But if not Betadine is fine. I had a vet tell me that Betadine is slighly more caustic than Novalsan so healing is usually faster with Nolvasan. ,Jasonnikkicoco11
