I have recently come across several retailers that have received huge consignments of wild-caught terrapins from Louisiana. Somehow, these retailers have established contact with local fishermen and have brought in female pileatas by the hundreds into Southern California. Several of us from the group went down to one of the facilities. There were at least a half dozen kiddie pools filled with 1″ of water and 7″-9″ female terrapins. The terrapins seemed to actually be in pretty good shape considering what they’d probably been through. No males were present in this location since Louisiana has an absurd law that prohibits the commercial harvesting of terrapins 6″ and under. Consequently, only mature females can be harvested as was observed by the presence of some specimens that were gravid. I brought 2 of them home against my better judgement. Hopefully the rest will be all bought up by responsible and experienced individuals who will know how to care for them properly and cause them to thrive, even in a captive environment. However, I couldn’t resist “rescuing” whatever my already overtaxed pond could take in. Seems to me like a catch-22; you don’t want to encourage more consignments of terrapins by buying some up and yet your heartstrings tug on you to give the best possible home to ones already displaced from their native waters… Any comments, opinions are welcome. -Chun
cschramm23July 29, 2002 at 9:20 am #17472It looks like one of the retailers may be advertising on kingsnake.com. There’s a person selling 100 female and 10 male WC Diamondbacks. His location is Southern California. Cole & Deb — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “diamondback_terrapin”
corruptdnaJuly 29, 2002 at 10:41 am #17473If you were to be so inclined, I would be interested in buying some and giving them a good home. It might be a leap of faith, but maybe you could be a broker of sorts for the group? I’d take 2 or 3. — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “diamondback_terrapin”
