I received a very interesting quote in my mailbox today… Do you think the canadian turtle regs allow for what the following quote speaks of? ————————————————- What we want is to see the child in pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in pursuit of the child. — George Bernard Shaw ————————————————- i think not… there is no flexibility in what the gov’t considers to be knowledge. It is old knowledge for petrified people. Still looking for loopholes… There is now another CFIA office in Calgary. I am thinking of filling out a request for permit and going to this other office armed to the teeth with salmonella info and my (miss sent) AHT diploma from Olds. Show them that allowing me to import turtles will not risk infecting the population with salmonella… That is their concern… if i can eliminate that concern then they should have no reason to shut down my request. If that doesn’t work then I am seriously considering starting up a petition (canada wide) and sending it to our local MP (member of parliment) to start the process of changing the regs. I think I have a couple computer/internet guru’s to help me build a website etc if need be. I haven’t given up… too much to lose if I do. So many interesting turtles out there. Julie, have you always been able to get permits for them? I’ve talked to the local CFIA rep and he blatently told me flat out that any request for permit would be denied… only zoos and researchers can obtain permits. I then contacted another CFIA rep online and she backed him up stating that the import officer is able to interpret the regs in anyway that they see fit… which makes me think that the local head office for alberta guy is a stickler… there is now another office in calgary… going to go to them with all my salmonella info and AHT school marks etc to apply again. so… wish me luck… likely won’t get up the guts or have all my poop in a pile for a week or two. the only turtles i’ve ever tried to get into canada were turned back to the states… I feel so helpless. I don’t want to try again till its full out legal… for the sake of the little turtles and I think I’d like the satisfaction of escorting them across the border and shoving all the paperwork in the official’s face and say there… take a look at that… you wouldn’t give it to me last time cause you guys are just plain petrified but looky looky now… big grin. sorry for sounding so grouchy but i guess I feel like people (CFIA in particular) just don’t care how much i’ve researched into these regs and their reasons for them… Their reasons just don’t seem logical to me… I can buy raw meat that is on or even past the best before date on the grocery shelf but i can’t import a captive bred turtle? You need at least 10 million salmonella organisms to even become infected… and then it is usually only the immune comprimised that get ill… and if you do get ill… it is relatively easy to fix with probiotics and supplements! Most people with pets, reptiles especially, know to wash their hands well afterwards and especially before eating or preparing food. Even if most don’t… I do… hello AHT trained here… I could safely isolate pretty much any specific species of bacteria from any infected animal in a culture and test it for sensitivity to antibiotics etc myself… and they think I don’t know enough to protect my family from contracting it. frustrating!!!! Anyways… if people have ANY experience shipping to/from canada I would really love to hear allllll the details. The more I have to arm myself with the more likely things could go my way. Thanks everyone. Michelle — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Julie Tougas

sorry for the rant earlier… I just re-read it after calming down a little… boy i sounded nasty! hehe oops! please forgive my momentary lapse in sanity… i think I feel better having gotten it off my chest though. I do hope however, that those of you with experience getting things in and out of canada can let me know of their experiences… you can email me directly if you want: michellemcguffin284@… Again, my apologies for abusing your eyes with my blather… very much humbled, michelle
