Has anyone come across any studies done on incubating mediums used for diamondback terrapins? I am curious as to required humidity and whether this varies with the different substrates used such as vermiculite, perlite, sand, etc. Opinions are welcome. Thanks. -Chun
I use perlite 1:1 with water and incubate in a Hovabator at 85 degrees for girls and 80 to 82 degrees for boys. I keep the resevoirs in the bottom of the Hovabator filled with water. Vickie
Vic, Initially, the mixture may be 1:1, but I notice that Hovabators will dry out the perlite very fast. Which course of action do we adopt then, supplement the medium with more water or allow the eggs to incubate in increasingly drier media? And is humidity even a crucial factor for successful hatching? In other words, does a certain amount of humidity in native egg-laying sites simply provide the proper consistency for retaining the shape of the nest for egg deposition or is it crucial for successful hatching? -Chun
