Most vendors were a little edgy yesterday at the monthly show here in Indianapolis on the heels of the Illinois actions, but the event proceeded pretty much as usual. Only one vendor continued to offer turtles under four inches. Don Hamper from Ohio set up with a smaller inventory than normal and now requires a signature confirming that the buyer is aware of the four inch regulation against selling turtles under four inches for pets (in addition to having the regualtion text posted on the table). One of the organizers of the upcoming Tinley Park show said that they were working with officials in an effort to have all inspections done before that show opens so as to avoid any possible enforcement actions during public hours. He reported that vendors still intend to offer non-pet turtle sales at the show as of now. Those I talked with yesterday here still feel that there is a big gray area regarding enforcement of the federal turtle regulation and that there is concern about how the Illinois actions might impact other states since federal officials assisted the Illinois officials at Streamwood. Exactly what determines whether a person is engaged in a business and the specifics of the exemptions is generally being regarded as still very uncertain here in the Midwest. Specific to the interest of this group, Hamper has some nice Texas, ornate and Texas/ornate crosses for sale. He also was offering a couple of adult male Texas and an adult male northern.
