Hi, My name is Kathleen and my 4 boys and I recently recued a turtle from being run over in the street. After about 1 1/2 hours of scrolling through turtle species I am convinced he is a diamondback terrapin. I am just not sure which one. We rescued him in East Central Florida so I first thought he must be a East Coast terrapin. But he looks almost identical to a Texas diamondback terrapin. I will post pics soon so I can get some opinions. We have him in a 10 gallon tank right now with a basking stone. I see from a lot of your pictures that you have vegetation in your habitats. What do you recomend? He loves ReptoMin. He is obviously a young baby and I have been feeding him 3 sticks twice a day. He eats most of it. I am also wondering when do I slow down the feeding. I have read a lot of different things there too. Also how can I offer a variety of food or should I? Thanks for your input. We are really enjoying watching Turdy (named by 4 boys 6 and under) and we are looking forward to giving him a healthy upbringing.
Hey Kathleen! Welcome! — If you have just found turdy (hhe) and dont know much about DB Terapins this is a GREAT place to learn! Im a fairly new owner and have learned more from this group than any book or most websites can teach! – I would say that instead of Reptomin I would switch him over to a food with a higher ammount of fish protein– I mean… try Jumbomin food sticks or something along those lines– The nutritoninal needs of DB’s are different than alot of turtles ( having come from the ocean naturally ) Im no expert but I have been told (from people here) that Reptomin is not a sufficent diet for DB’s–My guys love Jumbomin ( its little freeze dried shrimp thingys) look for it in the fish section- Im sure you will get many other recomendations from others here also! – Do you know about the proper lighting ?? You should buy a light bulb that provides UVA and UVB rays to insure proper growth for him since he isnt getting real sunlight– (just if you didnt know) — Good luck with him keep us uptodte!! Hello everybody, I have a questioning regarding Alligator Snapping turtles. My son found a hatchiling snapper this summer on the lawn of our lake house in Delavan, WI. I have after coming home from an extended leave, I cam e home and was looking at the turtle. It dawned on me that it looks alot like an Alligator Snapper. I did some checking and its an Alligator Snapper!!! All the way in WI… That is rare. The thing is, it is missing some Allgtr characteristics: the “worm” tongue and ts features are less pronounced. Can alligator snappers breed with a common snapper? thanks all …. I think there is someone who works at a zoo in this group and might have some insight….thanks
