Hi, I recently moved from Montana to Indiana. I’ve been here for ca. 1 week. My two dbt junveniles set up in a temporary tubs. I noticed that one seemed to not want to open its eye linds and even attempted to scratch them. I immediately took her out of water and tested the water pH. It turns out the pH was ~8.8. They are CB and used to freshwater. I’ve lowered the pH to = or with the itchy eyes. I had been feeding them in an extra tub and changing their water Do you think the itchy eyes is a result of high pH, poor water quality, parasites??? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Kurt

A friend of mine recently had a similar problem with high pH in her pond and her turtle’s eyes became irritated and developed a film over them. She cured it by lowering her pH as you did and also treating the eyes with a saline solution for about 1 weeks before the irritation stopped. The turtle’s eyes are just fine now. Regarding the saline solution, is this solution special for pets or the standard saline solution that people with contacts use? Thanks for your comments. It is for humans but is the same if you made your own using a mixture of water and boric acid, though I prefer to use the eye drops. You may also be able to find some made for turtles, but I have been unsuccessful in doing so unless you take her to a vet.
