Welcome to my world. My females drive me crazy with test holes. They have a sand pit (nesting area) attached to their tanks. They will dig large holes and for some reason decide not to lay their eggs. The next day the same routen. Sooner or later they will lay their eggs sometimes it will take up to a month. On the other hand I have a couple females that lay without diging test holes but for the most part they all do it. Here is a link to my site. I have several pictures of my setup, click on My Breeding Setup to see the pictures. http://www.geocities.com/diamondbackterrapins/ I also have information on incubating terrapin eggs. Hi, My females lay most of the time in a “tortoise yard” which is built out of a 2″x3″ pallet on wheels. I built screen sides and have about 5″ of a supersoil-sand-peat mix in it for them to dig. It is outside. They seem the most interested in digging when I have just soaked the dirt about 15 minutes before. It’s not wet but it is pretty damp. They also seem to like to dig in the heat of the day. I’ve noticed that about 15 days after I feel shelled eggs in my girls and I put them into the yard they will walk around a little bit. They may sniff the ground once or twice. Then all they want to do is get out. In another day or two I try again and this time they will walk around and lightly sniff several times and then try to get out. Again, in a couple more days I put them in the yard and invariably they will start sniffing all around and will also begin to test dig where they sniff with their front feet. If all is just right they may go ahead and move forward of the “front foot test dig” and start digging with their back feet. I have never had a dbt start digging with the back feet and not complete the whole egg laying process. Sometimes it may take several days of front foot test digging before the will actually lay. But because of my work scheduele once they start the front foot digging I sometimes induce them because I am sure they are ready to lay. All of my egg laying turtles lay in this yard. DBTs and my Chinese Box turtles. Vickie
