Hey people, I am a BIG turtle lover. I have a RES right now and I was wondering if he and a Carolina DBT can live with each other ?
Well it depends on who you talk to, but in my own personal experience, it did NOT work out long term. I had a male RES (6 years old) and a female DBT (3 years old) in a 90 gallon tank. It worked out quite well for most of the 3 years they were together, but eventually the male RES started to get a bit nippy. First he just was doing a little “light” nipping on the DB’s shell or rear legs. Then it progressed to where the RES was nipping the DB’s neck area!!! Once I saw that, he was pulled and put in isolation. He is NOT happy, but he brought it on himself. I will be putting him in the backyard pond later this spring/summer, so he will be living the good life once again. BTW, the female DBT NEVER showed any aggression to the RES………….she would just pull in limbs, etc. every time the RES came near her. RES’s have been noted for their aggression over the years, but it CAN work if you get lucky and end up with a submissive RES. A lot depends on how large of a tank you keep them in as well. If they are given gross amounts of space, then the aggression can be limited. I was pushing it with a 6 inch RES and a 5.5 inch DBT in only 90 gallons. My advice is NOT to put these guys together UNLESS you are committed to buying another large tank if and when any aggression begins. I would like to hear from other members on this topic as well.
