Does anyone know if there is an American studbook for Ornates? I just got back from the Turtle Survival Alliance symposium in Orlando and was taken aback by how helpful the European Studbooks are for hobbyists there. I had always thought that studbooks were more for zoos and other institutes, but apparently hobbyists have access to them too. This has allowed for some really great information sharing on husbandry techniques and breeding loan programs between zoos and hobbyists there. I found that idea very exciting! Anyhow, if there is no American studbook documenting the number and gender of animals in captivity–as well as the number of offspring each year–I would very much like to begin talking about making one. Any thoughts? AJ Dennis adennis14@… papaxaos@…

Hi AJ,There isn’t a studbook in the US for ornates. There are actually only a handful of people breeding them in the US. ThanksJonathanwww.diamondbackterrapin.comSent from my iPhone

Hello Johnathan, That is what I figured, but I thought it would be a great project to get started early. Would you be willing to participate if we get a registry/studbook going? Anyone else out there who is working with ornates (breeding or not) interested in contributing? From what I’ve seen of the most basic registries in Europe it is sufficient to log 1) number, sexes, and, if possible, age of the individuals in each collection; and 2) the origin and, again if possible, heritage/lineage of the individuals. Y’all have a good one, AJ
