Hi All, Yes, this may sound crazy, but I witnessed one of my old adult male diamondbacks digging two test holes yesterday. I have never seen this behavior before…very interesting. The way he dug looked exactly like a female would, with his hind legs. The holes are flask-like, just like the way females dig them. Has anyone observed this behavior before? I find this extremely odd and was wondering if anyone knows what this means. Thanks, -James
Dane FagundesApril 21, 2005 at 7:58 pm #20929What age is this male? Have you seen him court or breed with any females? This is strange. I wonder if he could be a hermophrodite? Danemacrospilota_terrapin

I have not seen him court or mate with another female, but he does show a little interest. He is 5 inches with a long thick tail, therefore he’s a male for sure. If I remember correctly, I think I’ve seen his reproductive organ as well. This is indeed really strange. -James — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Dane Fagundes
Dane FagundesApril 21, 2005 at 11:33 pm #20931James. I had a Eastern Red-bellied male or I think. Thick tail, but female length front claws. Never acted like a male and other males were indifferent to him/her.Dane in Californiamacrospilota_terrapin
Diamondback Terrapin WorldApril 22, 2005 at 12:56 pm #20932Hi James, I have only seen males dig with their front claws. That could be one of the weirdest things I have ever heard. Maybe he likes to keep a clean tank and has decided to do his business elsewhere 🙂 Later Jonathan macrospilota_terrapin
