marking techniques for dbt hatchlings

Hello all, I am marking hatchlings and would like some suggestions on how I should do this. I have heard of using nail polish, white out, epoxy glue, scanning pictures of the plastron, and using permanet markers. I am trying to stay away from the notching method because they are newly hatched turtles from their natural enviroment. I am aware that some types of nail polish have DBP – Dibutyl phthalate that can cause cancer realted symptons. Also xylene is not recommended. Does anybody have a suggestion or have you tried something new? Thank you!
Hi, I have to say this post really upset me. Why in the world would you want to do this to your turtles. Their is no reason to mark hatchlings. Their carapace will aborb any kind of paint you put onto it. They will grow so fast in the first year and they carapace will harden up, I am affaird what paint might do to their health. I know in the wild they notch or tag large adult for research. Please don’t subject your hatchlings to any kind of marking. There is no advantage to your hatchings by marking them. Seriously Scott why are you marking your DBTs? I really don’t understand this. It is safe for your child to swim in a pool with chlorine but not a DBT. Not every thing that is safe for us is safe for turtles. Jonathan The Scute Moderator Scott Salvi
