I just recently adopted 4 full grown northern DBTS…They have a little bit of shell probelms but the three who have the shell problems are EATING EVERYTHING they are fed!!! the one who is mainly healthy (by the appearance of her shell) isnt eating anything. I know with my boxies they dont eat that much before laying eggs and these are chinatown rescues from october. my question is, Is there any way possible that this female is ready to lay eggs right now? shes been kept inside since october and is wild caught so the chances of her being able to lay eggs are good but should it be this early? sorry for the long post Jake
Hi Jake, What are you doing to help their shells to heal? It is not likely that any of your females are ready to lay. The female that is eating most definitely is either stressed from her captive ordeal or diseased. In fact, wild-caught females will not lay for at least a year or two in captivity. And since you obtained them in October which is way past laying season, it is highly unlikely as well that this female had eggs in her when captured and has held them for so long. She should be force fed at this point and taken to the vet for treatment. Time is imperative at this point. All the best. -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “jk_johnston”
